Philharmonic in the Cathedral with “film” music

The Concert for Milan in Piazza Duomo with the Filarmonica della Scala and Riccardo Chailly on the podium is the most attended free musical event in Italian classical music. Cancelled last year due to a sudden storm, it returns with a tribute to great film music on June 5 at 9:30 pm. The concert is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Milan, supported by the Main Partner UniCredit, and the Sponsor Allianz. Emmanuel Tjeknavorian is the soloist for the suite from the ballet "Le boeuf sur le toit op. 58" by Darius Milhaud, a triumph of carnival rhythms and colors on popular Brazilian themes, a piece that Milhaud would have wanted as the soundtrack to a Chaplin film. The pages of John Williams return to the music stands, from the violin theme from "Schindler's List" entrusted once again to the lyricism of Tjeknavorian, to "Adventures on Earth" from ET the Extra-Terrestrial and to "Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra" from Indiana Jones.

Nino Rota has marked the history of world cinema music; the composer's suite and a selection of dance songs from Luchino Visconti's Il Gattopardo will be performed. The opening will be the energy of "Lollapalooza" by John Adams, a musical entertainment based on the word that gives the song its title: "a phenomenal, extraordinary thing" in American slang. An internationally renowned violinist, Tjeknavorian has been dedicating himself exclusively to conducting since 2022. Since 2024 he has been Music Director of the Milan Symphony Orchestra. Rai Cultura will broadcast the concert live on Rai 5 and RaiPlay starting at 9:15 pm. Ten HD cameras and the use of two cameras on an arm and overhead tracks will allow not only the music to be enhanced, but also the extraordinary setting of Piazza Duomo. The direction is by Stefania Grimaldi, the conduction by Elena Biggioggero.
